La giornata inizia alle 9:00: siamo accolti nella scuola “IES Enrique de Arfe” da Carmen e Restituto mentre le bandiere dei nostri paesi e dell’Europa sventolano davanti all’ingresso principale in un cielo terso. Carmen, preside della scuola e Resti, referente dei progetti Erasmus e segretario, entrambi al tempo stesso insegnanti di questo istituto, ci guidano all’interno dell’edificio. Ci basta passeggiare nei corridoi silenziosi e colorati per capire quanto gli studenti siano valorizzati e resi protagonisti dei loro apprendimenti. Notiamo una grande attenzione nella gestione dei tempi e degli spazi, con particolare riguardo alle esigenze emerse a causa della pandemia: ingressi scaglionati, segnaletica per regolare i movimenti interni, aule riservate alla gestione dei casi Covid, distanziamento; accorgimenti che permangono, nonostante qui in Spagna non sia più obbligatorio indossare la mascherina a scuola. Sulle pareti risaltano le foto dei gruppi degli studenti alla fine del loro percorso triennale, insieme ai loro insegnanti, il grande cartellone pieno di post it in cui in greco, inglese, francese e spagnolo sono espressi pensieri contro la violenza, l’angolo dedicato alla festa di San Valentino, le sculture e i molteplici progetti cui la scuola ha aderito. Ci sorprende, nell’aula biblioteca, un gruppo di studenti che, accompagnati dall’ insegnante alla chitarra, con flauti e xilofoni esegue il brano “La vita è bella” per accoglierci con una solennità piena di emozione che ci commuove. Segue un intenso “Bella ciao” intonato da Restituto. Terminiamo l’esplorazione con una visita all’orto in cortile e alla palestra in cui alcuni alunni sono impegnati in un’attività inventata per loro dall’insegnante, una staffetta ad ostacoli che deve essere compiuta cercando di schivare i proiettili gommosi lanciati dai compagni avversari disposti in due file per delimitare il percorso. Il collega di educazione fisica ci spiega poi che costruisce molte delle attrezzature sportive che usa (racchette, mazze e spade per la scherma) con materiali da riciclare con la collaborazione degli insegnanti del dipartimento di scienze. Dopo un delizioso caffè nel bar della scuola, cui possono accedere sia docenti che alunni, assistiamo alla lezione di Drama & Dancing: gli studenti hanno allestito uno spettacolo fatto di magie, danze e filastrocche. Si tratta di un corso opzionale, bensì molto frequentato. Nel pomeriggio, dopo un aperitivo con vista sulla bellissima Toledo, ed un pranzo nel ristorante speciale “Escuela de Hostelería” in cui a servirti sono gli studenti stessi (per intenderci come fosse un ristorante gestito da docenti e studenti di un istituto alberghiero), abbiamo visitato la Cattedrale e i monumenti più significativi di questo centro affascinante in cui elementi arabi, cristiani e ebraici si intrecciano in esemplare armonia. Per concludere uno sosta nell’antica Plaza Major di Tembleque del XVII secolo, con il palazzo comunale e su tre lati edifici con un eleganti porticati su tre ordini in pietra e legno, così progettata per essere il centro delle attività della cittadina ma anche per poter fungere da plaza de toros. The day starts at 9:00 a.m.: we are welcomed into the school “IES Enrique de Arfe” by Carmen and Restituto while the flags of our countries and of Europe wave in front of the main entrance in a clear sky. Carmen, principal of the school, and Resti, contact person for Erasmus projects and secretary, both at the same time teachers at this institute, guide us inside the building. We only have to walk through the silent and colourful corridors to realise how much the students are valued and made protagonists of their learning. We notice great care in the management of time and space, with particular regard to the needs that have emerged due to the pandemic: alternate entrances, signs to regulate internal movements, classrooms reserved for the management of Covid cases, social distancing; expedients that remain, despite the fact that here in Spain it is no longer compulsory to wear a face mask at school. On the walls lots of things stands out: the photos of the groups of students at the end of their three-year course, together with their teachers, the large poster full of post-it notes in which thoughts against violence are expressed in Greek, English, French and Spanish, thoughts dedicated to Valentine’s Day, the sculptures and the many projects the school has joined. We are surprised, in the library hall, by a group of students who, accompanied by the teacher on guitar, with flutes and xylophones perform the song “Life is beautiful” to welcome us with a solemnity full of emotion that moves us. This is followed by an intense ‘Bella ciao’ sung by Restituto. We end our exploration with a visit to the vegetable garden in the courtyard and to the gym where some pupils are engaged in an activity invented for them by the teacher, an obstacle relay race that must be completed by trying to dodge the gummy bullets thrown by opposing teammates arranged in two rows to mark the route. The PE colleague then explains that he builds much of the sports equipment he uses (rackets, bats and swords for fencing) from recycled materials with the collaboration of the science department teachers. After a delicious coffee in the school cafeteria, which is open to both teachers and pupils, we attend the Drama & Dancing class: the students put on a show of magic, dance and nursery rhymes. This is an optional course, but it is very popular. In the afternoon, after an aperitif with a view of the beautiful Toledo, and lunch in the special restaurant “Escuela de Hostelería” where the students themselves serve you (in other words, like a restaurant run by teachers and students of an hotel-management school), we visited the Cathedral and the most significant monuments of this fascinating centre in which Arab, Christian and Jewish elements intertwine in exemplary harmony. Finally, a stop at the old 17th-century Plaza Major of Tembleque, with the town hall and buildings with elegant stone and wooden arcades on three sides, designed to be the centre of the town’s activities but also to serve as a plaza de toros. Eccoci di nuovo pronti per l’avventura: i professori Tomeo, Olmi, Marcelli, Fabrizi arrivano a Madrid alle 12:30. Dall’aereoporto alla stazione centrale di Atocha e poi a Villacañas dove arriviamo alle 5 di pomeriggio. Ci accolgono Carmen e Alberto con la loro squisita gentilezza e ci si sente subito a casa. Siamo pronti a visitare la scuola IES Enrique de Arfe e a trarne ispirazione!

Here we are again, ready for adventure: teachers Tomeo, Olmi, Marcelli, Fabrizi arrive in Madrid at 12:30. From the airport to the central station of Atocha and then to Villacañas, where we arrived at 5pm. We were welcomed by Carmen and Alberto with their exquisite kindness and we immediately felt at home. We are ready to visit the school IES Enrique de Arfe and get inspired!

Oggi giornata dedicata alle tematiche ambientali! La classe terza E si fa trovare pronta alle 10:00 per lavorare in sette piccoli gruppi e cimentarsi in una Webquest su 7 diversi aspetti collegati all’ambiente: fonti di energia, acqua, aree verdi e piante, trasporti, rifiuti, sostenibilità, biodiversità. Attraverso la consultazione di un sito appositamente creato dalla Prof.ssa di inglese, Lucia Fabrizi, in cui erano presenti istruzioni di lavoro e fonti da consultare, grazie al contributo di ciascun gruppo, gli studenti sono brillantemente riusciti a realizzare il prodotto finale: un unico cartellone in cui, in base alla propria tematica di riferimento, sono stati raccolti slogan e consigli per incoraggiare comportamenti ecologici nella propria comunità. Il cartellone è stato poi affisso alle pareti del corridoio della scuola. L’attività è stata molto gradita dagli alunni della classe che hanno apprezzato soprattutto le tematiche approfondite, il lavorare in gruppo e la realizzazione di un comune prodotto finale. Today is environment day! Class 3E was ready at 10:00 to be involved in a Webquest on seven different aspects related to the environment: energy sources, water, green areas and plants, transport, waste, sustainability, biodiversity. Through the consultation of a website created by their English teacher Lucia Fabrizi, where there were instructions and sources to consult, and thanks to the contribution of each group, the students brilliantly managed to create the final product: a single poster on which slogans and advice were collected to encourage ecological behaviour, on the basis of the themes explored by the groups. The poster was then hung on the walls of the school hallway. The students in the class enjoyed the activity very much, especially the topic, the group work and the creation of a common final product. Nel pomeriggio ci siamo confrontati con i nostri colleghi spagnoli e altri colleghi della scuola sulle tematiche cuore del nostro progetto: Inclusione e Innovazione. Il meeting è stato molto utile per comprendere i sistemi scolastici italiano e spagnolo, raccogliere le idee ed avere un feedback sull’esperienza di osservazione nelle classi condotta da Carmen ed Alberto in questi giorni. In the afternoon we met our Spanish colleagues and other teachers from our school to discuss on the core topics of our project: Inclusion and Innovation. The meeting was very interesting: we compared the Italian and Spanish school systems, collected ideas and got feedback on the experience of observation in the classrooms conducted by Carmen and Alberto in these days. Dopo un veloce saluto agli alunni delle classi prima e seconda E, i nostri colleghi spagnoli hanno avuto la possibilità di osservare l’interessante laboratorio di tecnologia condotto nella classe terza C dalla prof.ssa Anna Tomeo in collaborazione con la prof.ssa Daniela Lautizi. Gli studenti, disposti in piccoli gruppi di tre o quattro componenti, erano intenti a concretizzare un’idea originale della loro insegnante: un tappeto di cartone pensato per leggere seduti in terra. Il piccolo sedile circolare è anche una borsa che può contenere il libro stesso, come mostrato nella foto. Terminata l’attività e decorati i tappeti con motivi floreali, tutto il gruppo classe si è spostato nell’ingresso principale e ha usato gli oggetti realizzati, disponendosi in un magico cerchio dal quale sono spuntate, attraverso le voci e la curiosità degli alunni, molte domande per i nostri ospiti sulla scuola da cui provengono.

Sorprendente anche il lavoro sulla prospettiva risultante in un Paperino attaccato sulla porta della classe: fornite le regole per il disegno, ogni studente ha realizzato la sua tessera in modo personale e poi, unendo insieme le parti, l’immagine d’insieme si è rivelata comprensibile e riconoscibile, sebbene irregolare ed inimitabile. Un perfetto esempio di quanto ogni giorno sperimentiamo nell’ambiente scolastico quando riusciamo a conciliare le diversità di ciascuno per il perseguimento di un obiettivo comune.

After a quick greeting to the pupils of classes 1 and 2 E, our Spanish colleagues had the opportunity to observe the interesting technology workshop conducted in class 3 C by teacher Anna Tomeo in collaboration with teacher Daniela Lautizi. The students, in small groups of three or four, were intent on realising an original idea of Ms Tomeo: a cardboard carpet designed for reading while sitting on the floor. The small circular seat is also a bag that can hold the book itself, as shown in the photo. Once the activity was over and the carpets had been decorated with floral motifs, the whole class group moved to the main hall and used the objects they had made, arranging themselves in a magical circle from which many questions arose for our guests about the school they come from.
Surprising the work on perspective that resulted in a Donald Duck stuck on the classroom door: given the rules for drawing, each student made his or her own tile and then, by joining the parts together, the overall image turned out to be comprehensible and recognisable, although irregular and inimitable. A perfect example of what we experience every day in the school environment when we manage to reconcile the diversity of each person in pursuit of a common goal.

Nonostante il clima avverso, oggi pomeriggio siamo riusciti ad effettuare una bellissima “passeggiata romana”! I nostri colleghi, Alberto e Carmen, avevano già trascorso del tempo nella nostra città eterna, perciò abbiamo fatto affidamento sulle competenze della nostra collega esperta di arte Cecilia Revessi, per un itinerario che potesse interessare e coinvolgere i nostri amici. Così,  abbiamo scoperto tante curiosità che ci hanno affascinato e abbiamo arricchito la nostra conoscenza della città, che quasi mai abbiamo modo di vivere da turisti.  La chiesa di San Giorgio al Velabro, la Bocca della Verità e il portico d’Ottavia, sono solo alcune delle tappe protagoniste di un pomeriggio molto bagnato, ma incredibilmente ricco di entusiasmo ed emozioni!

Despite the bad weather, we managed to go on a wonderful ‘Roman walk’ this afternoon! Our colleagues, Alberto and Carmen, had already spent some time in our eternal city, so we relied on the expertise of our Art colleague Cecilia Revessi for an itinerary that would interest and engage our friends. Thus, we discovered many curiosities that fascinated us and enriched our knowledge of the city. The church of San Giorgio al Velabro, the Bocca della Verità and the Portico d’Ottavia, the Roman ghetto, were just some of the stops on a very wet afternoon, but incredibly rich in enthusiasm and emotions!

I ragazzi e le ragazze della nostra classe si sono messi al lavoro nelle ultime settimane per dare vita a progetti originali e stimolanti da mostrare agli insegnanti di Villacañas.
Con responsabilità e piena collaborazione, grazie anche alla guida esperta della loro insegnate di spagnolo, gli alunni sono stati divisi in quattro piccoli gruppi di ricerca, ognuno dei quali ha approfondito e presentato luoghi e tradizioni caratteristici della Spagna: la capitale Madrid, l’Andalusia, la regione Castilla y la Mancha (luogo d’origine dei nostri colleghi iberici) e il lunghissimo Cammino di Santiago.
All’interno di ciascun gruppo ognuno ha fornito il proprio contributo studiando, disegnando e esponendo i risultati delle ricerche in spagnolo. Hanno così preso vita cartelloni colorati e power point pieni di spunti che hanno animato la mattinata.
L’impegno dei ragazzi è stato premiato con un’ottima performance che ha suscitato l’interesse e l’apprezzamento dei nostri colleghi spagnoli.

The boys and girls in our class have been working over the last few weeks on original and inspiring projects to show the teachers in Villacañas.
With responsibility and full cooperation, and with the expert guidance of their Spanish teacher, the pupils were divided into four small research groups, each of which explored and presented characteristic places and traditions of Spain: the capital Madrid, Andalusia, the Castilla y la Mancha region (the place of origin of our Iberian colleagues) and the very long St James Way.
In each group, everyone made his/her own contribution by studying, drawing and displaying the results of their research in Spanish. Colourful posters and power points full of ideas came to life and animated the morning.
The children’s commitment was rewarded with an excellent performance that aroused the interest and appreciation of our Spanish colleagues.

Oggi i nostri colleghi spagnoli sono stati ospiti della classe 1°C anche per la lezione di inglese! Gli alunni si sono allenati attraverso due attività interattive per un ripasso giocoso delle variazioni ortografiche del present simple e dei frequency adverbs. Accedendo alla classroom di inglese hanno potuto dapprima esercitarsi con una scheda interattiva della piattaforma liveworksheets. Successivamente si sono cimentati in una sfida con il quiz interattivo Kahoot. I colleghi spagnoli hanno osservato l’evolversi della lezione ed i ragazzi hanno mostrato un grande entusiasmo e partecipazione!

Today our Spanish colleagues were also guests in class 1C for English class! The pupils practised two interactive activities for a playful review of variations in the spelling of the present simple and frequency adverbs. By accessing the English classroom, they used an interactive worksheet from the liveworksheets platform. Afterwards, they were challenged with a Kahoot quiz. Our Spanish colleagues observed the lesson and the students showed great enthusiasm and participation!

Nel pomeriggio ha avuto luogo un incontro importante con l’assessore alla cultura, Dot.ssa Federica Battafarano e la preside del nostro Istituto Comprensivo, Dot.ssa Velia Ceccarelli, che i colleghi avevano già avuto modo di incontrare a scuola di mattina. L’assessore ha sottolineato l’importanza dei progetti europei realizzati nella nostra scuola nel corso degli anni per promuovere il territorio, l’inclusione e la valorizzazione delle diversità insite in ogni cultura nonché una dimensione europea che favorisca la nascita di un forte senso di appartenenza ad una comunità ampia; il dialogo, la condivisione, l’esplorazione delle ricchezze locali diventa un’importante occasione di crescita per le giovani generazioni e per tutta la cittadinanza. Con Davide poi, nostra fantastica guida poliglotta, abbiamo esplorato la Necropoli a cielo aperto di Cerveteri, scoprendo curiosità, antiche tradizioni e storia del paese dalle origini etrusche, durante una piacevole passeggiata, immersi nel verde.

In the afternoon an important meeting took place with the councillor for culture, Federica Battafarano and the principal of our Comprehensive Institute, Velia Ceccarelli, whom colleagues had already met at school in the morning. The councillor emphasised the importance of the European projects carried out at our school over the years to promote the territory, inclusion and appreciation of the diversity inherent in every culture, as well as a European dimension that fosters the emergence of a strong sense of belonging to a large community; dialogue, sharing, exploration of local resources become an important opportunity for growth for the younger generations and for all citizens. With Davide, our fantastic multilingual guide, we explored the open-air Necropolis of Cerveteri, discovering curiosities, ancient traditions and the history of the town of Etruscan origins, during a pleasant walk in the countryside.

Ci siamo finalmente conosciuti! Carmen e Alberto arrivano intorno alle ore 16:00 alla stazione di Ladispoli. Io e la collega Fabrizi siamo liete di offrire loro un primo assaggio del borgo antico di Cerveteri e poi, un po’ di tempo a respirare l’odore tonificante del nostro mare, facendo una passeggiata sulla spiaggia di Santa Severa.

Abbiamo già avuto modo di confrontarci su tante tematiche, didattiche e non. Sembra strano ma, nonostante le differenze dei nostri sistemi scolastici, ho avuto l’impressione che siano davvero molti gli aspetti che ci accomunano, primo fra tutti l’entusiasmo per ciò che insegniamo, la voglia di fare sempre meglio e di cercare soluzioni creative alle comuni sfide che dobbiamo affrontare a scuola.

We finally met! Carmen and Alberto arrive at 4pm at Ladispoli station. My colleague Fabrizi and I are delighted to guide them on a first tour of the ancient town of Cerveteri and then to spend some time breathing the invigorating air of our sea, taking a walk on the beach at Santa Severa.

We have already had the opportunity to discuss many issues, not only educational ones. It sounds strange but, despite the differences in our school systems, I have the impression that we have many things in common, above all the enthusiasm for what we teach, the desire to do better and to seek creative solutions to the common challenges we face at school.

This project stems from a need for professional growth perceived by the entire school staff of our ICS SALVO D’ACQUISTO. We’re going to reflect on the themes of INNOVATION and INCLUSION with the colleagues that work in the European schools IES ENRIQUE DE ARFE, Villacañas, Spain and No Bell Szkoła Podstawowa Montessori, Konstancin- Jeziorna, Poland. Thanks to the funding obtained by the Italian Erasmus + Agency, it will be possible for us to visit our European partners, observe their inclusive and innovative actions and share ideas about the emerging educational challenges. This blog will be at the same time a diary and public square where our experiences can be told and our ideas can meet.
